Improving access to existing data, through the design and implementation of a user-friendly access policy in Nigeria

29 Jan 2015 - 06 Feb 2015
Abuja and Kaduna States, Nigeria

Three training workshops on proving access to existing data through the design and implementation of a user-friendly access policy took place in Abuja and Kaduna, Nigeria. These workshops brought together data users and producers.

Representatives from the government, farmers, media, academics, and development partners were introduced to the basics of open data and then guided through the process of accessing online data sets, including the AMIS and NBS portals.

The participants also provided feedback on their understanding of open data and their willingness to take what they have learnt back to their respective organizations and encourage the practice and use of open data.

Not only were the training sessions described as a rich learning experience by the participants, but the organizers were also able to gather insight as to what types of data are of most value to the participants. For example, crop prices were regarded as a priority dataset in both Abuja and Kaduna.

By the end of the workshops, the participants felt confident to independently search and download the data that was relevant to their work.

As a recommendation of the workshop, a draft access policy was designed in accordance with the relevant strategic documents (Statistical Act, NSDS, etc.). This policy will be finalized and submitted for approval to the relevant authorities.
