Market transparency key for global food security

In a statement during the OECD Meeting of Agriculture Ministers last week, the United States Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, highlighted the importance of improved market transparency to strengthen global food security.
Against this background, he encouraged countries to “embrace open and transparent data as a global public good that makes possible a policy dialogue based on best available information.” He continued that “international cooperation to develop open data systems, such as the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) […], promises enhanced market transparency, coordinated research and development efforts, and access to technology that can help build productive and sustainable agriculture and food systems.”
